What Are The Division Of Integers Rules?


Before we begin, here are the rules for Dividing Integers:
  • If the sign of two divided numbers are the same, the result will have a positive sign.
  • If either sign of two divided numbers are different, the result will have a negative sign.

Dividing integer examples:

  • Dividing Positive Numbers:
    Tip: A positive (+) divided by a positive (+) always equals a positive (+)
    (a) +5 ÷ +1 =
        5 ÷ 1 = +5 = 5


  • Dividing Negative Numbers:
    Tip: A negative (-) divided by a negative (-) always equals positive (+)
    (a) -5 ÷ -1 = +5 = 5

  • Dividing Numbers With Different Signs:
    Tip: A negative (-) divided by a positive (+) always equals negative (-)
    (a) -5 ÷ +1 =
        -5 ÷ 1 = -5


    Tip: A positive (+) divided by a negative (-) always equals negative (-)
    (a) +5 ÷ -1 =
        5 ÷ -1 = -5
