What Are The Rules For Adding Integers?
Before we begin, here are the rules for Adding Integers:
- Two integers added together with the same sign produces a result with the same sign.
- Add two numbers integers together with different signes produces a result with the sign of the larger number.
Adding integers examples:
- Adding Positive Numbers:
(a) 5 + 1 = +6 = 6
- Adding Negative Numbers:
(a) -5 + (-1) =
-5 - 1 = -6
(b) -5 + (-1) =
-(5 + 1) =
-(6) = -6
- Adding Positive and Negative Numbers:
(a) -6 + 14 =
14 - 6 = 8
(b) -6 + 14 =
+(14 - 6) =
+(8) = +8 = 8
(c) 7 + (-11) =
-(11 - 7) = -4
