Negative sign and subtraction sign are really the same thing.
Positive sign has no affect on negative numbers.
When subtracting two numbers, use the sign of the larger number for the answer.
Adding Positive Numbers
:
(a) 5 + 1 = +6 = 6
Adding Negative Numbers
:
(a) -5 + (-1) =
-5 - 1 = -6
(b) -5 + (-1) =
-(5 + 1) =
-(6) = -6
Adding Positive and Negative Numbers:
(a) -6 + 14 =
14 - 6 = 8
(b) -6 + 14 =
+(14 - 6) =
+(8) = +8 = 8

-(11 - 7) = -4
