Multiplication Definitions: Multiplication, Multiply, Multiplicand, Multiplier, And Product

A simple example will be used to explain these definitions. Let's answer the question with an example. Jimmie's uncle Joe gives him two bags of peaches. Each bag has three peaches. How many peaches in total are there?
Bag one has three peaches:           Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object
Bag two also has three peaches:      Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object
The total number of peaches is six:   Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object

How do we show this in integer multiplication math?

  • Visually:   Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object × Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object = Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object Peach is an multiplication object
  • Numerically: 3 × 2 = 6

As you can see, instead of adding three two times we used a short cut and called it multiplication.

Multiplication Definitions
Word Definition
Multiply To add repeatedly the same addend to get an answer. Above we added three peaches twice to get six. We also showed that multiplying three by two gives us the same answer.
Multiplication The act of multiplying. The sign "×" indicates multiplication.
Multiplicand The number to be multiplied. In the example above, number three is the multiplicand.
Multiplier The number that is doing the multiplying. In the example above, number two is the multiplier.
Product The result of multiplying two numbers together. In the example above, number six is the product.
