Learn How To Add Numbers

Let's talk in some details about adding numbers in real life. If you have 99 pennies, you need one more penny to make a $1.00. Now you find one penny on side walk. You have 100 pennies or one dollar ($1.00). Now let's take the next step and show mathematically how to do what we just talked about.

Step 1

First, state the problem. We have 99 pennies and want to add 1 penny to the 99.
Step 2

Next we add the numbers in column A: 9 + 1 which is 10. From 10 bring the right most number down (0) in column A and regroup / carry the (1) from the 10 to column B.
Step 3

Now add the regrouped/carried 1 in column B to the 9 in column B. Again you get 10. Place the 0 from ten in column B of the answer and carry the 1 of the ten to column C (this is called carry addition or regroup addition).
Step 4

The third and last column, C, has only 1 which was carried in the Step 3 math operation. The final problem answer is 100 pennies or $1.00.
